Mangao is located a further day’s walk to the northeast of Pyarulam. Steaming hot and extremely remote, its disease pattern is similar to other low-lying areas such as Elem, with high rates of malaria and significant levels of malnutrition. The community is culturally distinct from Enga, speaking the Magahai language.
For many years, Mangao had no formal health services. With the opening of the airstrip in 2011, EBHS placed a health worker in the area for the first time, and services commenced in March 2013 with a Community Health Worker (CHW) stationed at the aid post. Since then, a permanent staff house was constructed in 2020, and the aid post received a solar-powered vaccine fridge to support maternal and child health.
In 2025, EBHS completed the rebuilding of a new aid post facility, representing a major investment in this extremely underserved region. However, due to tribal fighting, the CHW stationed there had to be withdrawn for safety, and the aid post is currently closed. Once the tribal conflict is resolved, EBHS plans to redeploy staff to Mangao.
Mangao remains one of the most remote and challenging locations in the Kompiam catchment. Ongoing needs include safe staffing, reliable access, and continued support for infrastructure maintenance. Despite these challenges, the rebuilt aid post stands ready to serve once conditions allow health workers to return.
